DePuy Hip Replacement Recall
DePuy Orthopaedics recently issued a worldwide recall of its ASRTM XL Acetabular Hip System and ASRTM Hip Resurfacing System. The ASR products DePuy recalled are metal-on-metal (MoM) hip replacement devices. The ASR devices have been on the market since 2003, and more than 93,000 patients are potentially affected by the recall.
Hip replacement surgery is one of the most common surgeries in the U.S.; and younger, more active individuals are now frequently having one or both hips replaced. MoM hip implants were popular because they were supposed to be more durable than other types of implants. However, recent studies have shown that friction between the metal parts creates high volumes of metallic debris that is absorbed into the patient’s body. The debris can cause severe inflammatory responses in some patients, damaging muscles and other soft tissues and requiring a follow-up operation called a revision surgery to replace the device. While artificial hips are supposed to last 15 years or longer, many patients who had major hip surgery to receive MoM hips just a few years ago have already had, or will soon need painful revision surgery. DePuy’s data shows that within five years after implantation, approximately 12% of patients (one in eight) who had received the ASR resurfacing device and 13% of patients (one in eight) who had received the ASR total hip replacement needed to have a second hip replacement (revision) surgery.
